Marcos Teases Upcoming SONA Amid Corruption Concerns

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has hinted at potential discussions regarding corruption in his upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA), scheduled for Monday, July 27. When asked about whether he would address the corruption issues he previously highlighted, Marcos responded cryptically, saying, "Abangan ang susunod na kabanata" or "Stay tuned for the next chapter."

As the President prepares for his fifth SONA, he indicated that he is nearing completion of his speech but may still make last-minute adjustments. In an ambush interview conducted in Pampanga, he stated, "I'm never done. Until one hour before the SONA, I'm still changing it, you know, because, of course, we want it to be perfect."

Marcos elaborated that while the core content of his speech is largely finalized, he is focused on refining the language to ensure it is neither too lengthy nor too brief. He mentioned, "On the whole, yes, on the whole, I would say the actual language is 90% plus done. We're just fixing it up and making sure that it's not too long or it's not too short, that we have everything that we want to talk about is already included."

The President views the SONA as a crucial report to the public, reflecting on the government's actions since the last address. He emphasized the importance of communicating the administration's efforts to navigate the challenges faced during this tumultuous period. "And that is what we will take up, of course. I will make sure that people know all of the things that we have done to navigate this very difficult period in our history, where we are buffeted by all of these external forces," he stated.

Marcos expressed confidence in the government's response to these challenges, noting that adjustments made have been effective in helping the populace cope with ongoing difficulties. He remarked, "But nonetheless, our response has been good, and we have had to make adjustments, but those adjustments have been effective and have served their purpose. And I know that it has helped people weather this storm and continue to weather this storm until things hopefully normalize."

In the lead-up to the SONA, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro suggested that a significant announcement could be forthcoming. When asked if the President would deliver an "earth-shaking announcement," she responded, "Lagi naman pong ganu'n," indicating that such expectations are common during these addresses.

As the nation anticipates the SONA, the focus remains on how Marcos will address pressing issues, including corruption, and what new initiatives or policies he may unveil. The speech is expected to provide insights into the administration's accomplishments and future plans, as well as its strategies for tackling ongoing challenges.
