JRU Heavy Bombers Capture First Filoil Preseason Championship

Jose Rizal University (JRU) made history by defeating San Beda University, 74-67, in Game 2 of the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup Finals, securing their first-ever championship in this tournament. The decisive match took place on Thursday, showcasing a thrilling contest that saw the Heavy Bombers maintain their composure against a determined Red Lions squad.

JRU established a solid foundation for their victory by building a 12-point lead, 52-40, at the end of the third quarter. However, San Beda, the reigning NCAA champions, fought back fiercely, narrowing the gap to just five points at 62-57 with 3:12 left in the game. This comeback effort highlighted the resilience of the Red Lions, who were determined to keep their championship hopes alive.

In response to San Beda's surge, JRU executed a critical run that proved pivotal in the final moments of the game. Stephen Garupil hit two crucial three-pointers, while Aldous Torculas added another triple, extending JRU's lead to 68-60 with just 2:09 remaining. This sequence of plays was instrumental in shifting the momentum back in favor of the Heavy Bombers, allowing them to regain control of the match.

As the clock wound down, Ivan Panapanaan contributed to the scoreline by splitting his free throws after drawing a foul from JC Bonzalida, bringing the score to 69-60. San Beda's Zed Etulle responded with a basket to trim the deficit to six points, but the Heavy Bombers held firm in the closing moments. Key free throws from Lawrence Mangubat sealed the victory for JRU, despite late attempts from San Beda's Dom Sarigumba and Torculas to narrow the score further.

Mangubat, a standout player for JRU, was named the Most Valuable Player of the finals. He led his team with an impressive performance, scoring 27 points, including six three-pointers, while also contributing three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. His ability to perform under pressure was crucial to JRU's success in the championship.

In addition to Mangubat's stellar play, Adrian Eligado added 10 points, while Garupil and Chris Hubilla chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively. The collective effort from the team was evident, as they executed their game plan effectively against a tough opponent.

On the other side, San Beda's Etulle led his team with 14 points, while Torculas finished with 13 points in a valiant effort that ultimately fell short.
